But it still takes me by surprise and I'm still stunned and dismayed when I learn my favorite show has been canceled. My Stargate fandom goes back to SG1, of course, but I drifted away from that show mid-run due to the fact I'd stopped enjoying it, and then discovered Stargate Atlantis in season two. I quickly caught up and very quickly fell in love with it and the characters. It went through a lot of changes, cast-wise, but I'd long since learned to roll with the punches when it came to fandom and TV shows, so I was okay with them. And the ratings were dong well this season, so I was really hoping there would be a season six, although the odds were against it. But, then, the odds of any TV show lasting five years and 100 episodes isn't good these days, so I consider myself very lucky in the five years we did get. And I can honestly say I have loved every season of the show and just about every episode, which is something I haven't been able to say about every show I've loved. When a show stops entertaining me, I walk away, and I've never had to do that with SGA. So, along with my disappointment, I'm pleased I've been happy with it all along and am not left with the mixed feelings i still have about SG1.

So, here's to ya, SGA! You rock my world, and thanks to fandom and all the talented, wonderful, sharing fans out there, I'm sure you will continue to rock my world for a very long time.

Stargate Atlantis won the People's Choice Award! This is an award voted on by the fans, and it was up against Doctor Who and BSG. So, go them! It was totally well deserved, and the little taped acceptance speech by Joe Flanigan, David Hewlett, Rachel Lutrell and Jewel Stait was much fun. In my own opinion, this is their best season yet and I'm really pleased that the fans came out for them. :)

I recently had a yearning to re-read books I first read when I was, shall we say, young and innocent. So I dug through my bookshelf and started with Orwell's 1984. That book still has the power to scare me. In fact, I think it scares me even more now than it did when I was young, probably because I'm just cynical enough now to believe something like that can happen. It was fascinating to read it with some life experience behind me this time around, so after I was finished with that I moved on to Fahrenheit 451. This book still has the power to make me feel sick and cold in the stomach. I readily remember the horror I felt the first time I read it, that a society would *burn books*. But this time around I took something else from it, something from the Coda Mr. Bradbury added which I found even more eerily appropriate now than when he originally wrote it:

"There is more than one way to burn a book. And the world is full of people running about with lit matches. Every minority, be it Baptist / Unitarian, Irish / Italian / Octogenarian / Zen / Buddhist, Zionist / Seventh-day / Adventist, Women's Lib / Republican, Mattachine / FourSquareGospel feels it has the will, the right, the duty to douse the kerosene, light the fuse."

Bless you, Mr. Bradbury. Not only are groups still trying to hold the match to books, but they are also doing it to TV shows and movies. Because, you know, other people obviously aren't competent enough to decide for themselves what they want to watch and read...

So what's up next? I pulled a few yellowed and worn paperbacks from my shelf and am trying to make the decision: Lord of the Flies or Animal Farm? Or perhaps The Lathe of Heaven? (Hmm. Apparently at one point in my life I could actually read the teeny tiny print in this book...) I think perhaps Lord of the Flies. My goodness, it's been decades since I've read that one. And, along with all this, I am totally itching to re-read one of my favorite books of all times, Watership Down. And one of my other favorites, Good Omens. For some reason, this time of the year always makes me want to return to 'comfort reading', whether it be fanfic or novels, like I'm wrapping myself up warm with them, and these are two of my all-time favorite comfort reads.

Does anyone else have comfort reads? Novels you return to time and time again like a trusted friend?

So many books, never enough time…

Oh, while I'm rambling on, let me just say that this season of Stargate: Atlantis has ROCKED. There were so many things that could have been oh-so-wrong with this season, with cast changes, but it has been the best season so far, in my opinion. I can honestly say that I have been immensely entertained all season so far, and I loves my show!

And before I forget, a book recommendation: World War Z by Max Brooks. It's like The Stand with zombies. Kind of. I couldn't put it down, seriously.

Okay, I must have been living under a rock for the last couple of decades, because I although I knew there were parents who would petition schools to remove what they considered 'unsuitable' books from libraries, I honestly didn't realize there were such a thing as Banned Books in this day an age. Who knew?

And look what topped the list as The Most Challenged Book of 2006:

SGA Tonight!

This is my squee! for the S4 premiere of Stargate Atlantis tonight! I am so excited about Season 4! I have done very well in avoiding spoilers for the upcoming season (with the exception of the few that have been all over the place and, really, if you're on the internet there was no way to avoid them), and am just so looking forward to it. I'm even okay about the changes. I mean, I wasn't thrilled when I heard about some of them, but I was happy with the characters they had. Still, my favorite character is still on the show - the City itself, in all her stained-glass glory. And they're still in the Pegasus Galaxy and still fighting for their survival and all of them are misfits who left Earth behind, bless them, and are making a life for themselves and doing their best to keep each other safe. I just really hope the ratings are good enough to bring a fifth season, because I think they have a lot of stories yet to tell.

And in other news...Mall Walking! This week I logged 7.81 miles (24,948) steps before work, which is making me very happy even if I do have to leave earlier in the mornings to get it accomplished. I've come to really look foward to that 35-40 minutes of walking with my iPod and nodding to the other 'regulars' at oh-dark-hundred in the mall. Using this week's mileage as a baseline, I'm now going to strive to raise that for the next week.

Mall-Walking

I tried something new this morning: I went to the local mall before work and did mall-walking. Wow. It's like, joining a sekrit society! There's a whole community of mall-walkers out there at 6:45 in the morning! Who knew? When I first went into the mail, I went into a side entrance and it was pretty quiet, except for some kind of beeping alarm coming from one of the closed stores. At first I thought I might be alone, because there wasn't anyone around, and I started to get a little nervous. Sure there had been cars in the parking lot, but who knew what might be waiting for me, alone inside the Big Empty Scary Mall...? Then I turned a corner, a a white-haired granny sped past me, arms pumping, a look of grim determination on her face; she gave me a nod and disappeared in a cloud of dust. I soon came across the rest of the community. Pairs, singles, what I think was a father (or grandfather) and young man, older, younger, silver-haired, not-silver-haired, mp3 players. All of them giving me a cheery hello as I passed them going in the other direction, their coats slung over the horses on a nearby mini merry-go-round as they did their routine. I plugged in my iPod and went on my way, giving others the wave/hello/nod in turn as we passed each other. The mall was playing piped in music, but I preferred my own, having made a playlist of upbeat music to walk fast to. Did 1.2 miles in just under a half hour, which is decent, but not great, but a good first time out for me, and then made it to work on time. Doing this means I need to leave home more than a half hour earlier than normal, but I'm going to try to shoot for at least 3 times a week, and more if I can make it out the door in time. It was fun, I got to listen to some of my favorite music, and it made me feel better and more energized before starting my day. Living in an apartment, I'm pretty limited as to what I can do for exercise that early in the morning without the downstairs neighbor banging on my floor, so this seems like a really good solution. Go, me! :)

Geeks in leather...

Oh, my. Geeks in leather. Come on, September 28! I think I'm of the opinion now that geeks should always wear leather...

I am just so looking forward to SGA S4. I know there have been a lot of changes, I know I may end up not liking some of them, but I just feel this excitement, and I'm willing to go with the flow. I enjoy the show as a whole, and I love the whole idea of the City of Atlantis. In fact, I think the only way I'd stop watching would be if they actually blew up the City and we never got to see it again. When the production finally shuts down (not for a long time, I hope) I want to buy the set and move in. :) In the meantime, I've got Geeks in Leather to keep me occupied. Now, if they'd only put Zelenka in leather...

Catching up on books read...

No spoilers here, just some reactions.

Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling - Easily my favorite book of the series. It had everything, and for me it was the most compelling page-turner of the HP series. And it was the first book where I kept thinking, 'This is going to make a fabulous movie. I can't wait!' My 15-year-old nephew and I read it at the same time, and we would call each other up in the evenings to discuss what we'd read each day. I gave him the first HP book when he was 8 and he's grown up along with Harry. This was the first one of the series where we sat down and had a real 'grown-up' discussion about the book, the characters, their motivations and what it all meant. It was his favorite HP book as well. But I think the greatest joy for me was when he thanked me for giving him that first HP book and telling me he wasn't sure he would now have such a passionate love of reading if it hadn't been for that. Color me one proud and happy auntie.

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Wow. I'd heard nothing but raves about this book so I couldn't wait to read it. Perhaps there's another book out there of the same title that all those other people read… The style of writing didn't engage me, there was a major squick factor I couldn't overcome, and I suppose the deal-breaker for me was that I never liked the main character. I more or less forced myself to finish it to see how it all turned out, but it was a pretty much joyless read.

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini - I can't say enough about this book. I picked it up and started reading and could barely force myself to put it down. This isn't an easy story, and it has its share of heartbreak -- no surprise there as it's set in modern day Afghanistan -- but it's a story that won't fade away after you've read it. It stays with you and won't let go. I'd recommend this read to anyone; in fact, I'd call it one of the best novels I've read.

I'm getting ready to start Hosseini's second book, A Thousand Splendid Suns, and I'm hoping for another powerful read.

I've been using LibraryThing (www.librarything.com) to organize my books as I read them, and it's been great for keeping me on track with my reading. I realized a few months ago thta I'd pretty much been reading nothing but fanfic for some time now. I love fanfic, and I wouldn't give it up for the world, but that was all I was reading. Gone were the days when I would put a book in my handbag to have it to read if I found myself with a few spare minutes or having one I automatically picked up whenever I sat down. I think I'm back on track now, with a good mixture, and once again find a novel in my handbag and a book or two which I automatically reach for when I sit down.

Recommendations for good reads cheerfully accepted. :)

Books in Progress

I imagine I'm about the only person in the universe at the moment not reading the latest Harry Potter this weekend. :) But I expect I'll be shutting myself away next weekend to read it. The reason is that elgrey the Magnificent sent me the UK version for my birthday, so it hasn't arrived yet. But that's okay because I've got the entire set in the UK version, thanks to her, and the Nephew and Nieces got my American collection (also thanks to her!). So I am very happy to wait until it gets here. I only need to be carefuly of spoilers, and so far everyone is being very considerate and careful about that.

In the meantime, I finished Inkspell, the sequal to Inkheart, and this series has easily become one of my favorite book worlds ever. elgreyand I just found out this morning that the author, Cornelia Funke, is going over the final draft of the last in the series and we should be getting it in English in 2008. I really can't wait.

I absolutely love stories about people interacting in book worlds. I was fascinated by Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next novels. Which reminds me, I need to see if there's a new one out there. I've got 4 of them, and I thought I heard something about a new one coming out in the not-so-distant future. Must investigate...

In the meantime, I hope to finish up The Golden Compass (aka Northern Lights to everyone but Americans, apparently) by Philip Pullman before Harry Potter shows up at my front door. Golden Compass has been on my bookshelf for ages, and its time has finally come.

Movie: Order of the Phoenix

Just got back from seeing Order of the Phoenix. Opinions of the nephew (15) and nieces (12 and 14): 'It was the best one yet!' I'd probably have to agree with them based on the fact I was thoroughly entertained the entire time. I think, in the case of the HP books, it also helps that it has been so long since I've read whichever one I'm going to see, that I forget large chunks of it and don't miss if things are cut out. The Nephew remembered something that I had completely forgotten, and he read it the same time I did. I think it's probably better viewing for me that way. I'm not anticipating things (although I always remember the deaths in the books and I know those are going to happen) and not disappointed when things may have been left out. And the special effects in it were just wonderful.

I know it's been a long time since I've been to the movies (I think the last time was probably for Narnia), but is it new that you sit through 15 minutes of TV commercials?? I mean, commercials for TV shows and advertisements that you see on TV. And only after you have sat through those do you finally get to the movie previews. Some of which actually looked kind of intriguing...

Anyhow, thoroughly enjoyed the movie and I really am impatiently awaiting the next book.

And now, a long-awaited cup of tea and back to Inkspell.

SGA S3 DVD artwork

ankh_lj was just talking about bad DVD boxset artwork yesterday, and lo and behold, I've found yet another example. Behold the Stargate: Atlantis S3 DVD artwork:

They've put a gun in Rodney's hands! (This man doesn't need a gun, he can kill you with his brain.) They look like they're trying to squeeze through an old tire! And what the heck is that expression on Ronon's face supposed to be about? Tight fit through the tire? Arrgh. And poor Teyla is just standing there at the back without her sticks. But...they put a P90 in Rodney's hands! That is just wrong on every level. Just...stop it, people. Hire someone who understands these shows and characters and knows a little bit about, oh I don't know, artistic placement maybe? Thank goodness once the DVDs are on my bookshelf I only have to look at the spines.

Cell phones and changes...

It was a very productive weekend and Changes Were Made. After sitting down and evaluating some things, I came to the realization that I never really use my home phone. I have one because I used to have dial-up and then I had broadband, and even after I had a cell phone it never really occurred to me not to have a land-line phone because...well, I've always had one. But I have noticed that more and more people are just relying on cell phones. And, to be honest, most of the calls I seem to get on my home number are sales calls. So I made some changes.

It really all started when I renewed my cell phone contract and upgraded my phone. It's not an iPhone *g*; it wasn't even all that expensive, costing me about $10 with a rebate, but it is very spiffy, and I spent a lot of time this weekend shuffling things around and putting people into groups and inputting all kinds of handy information to have at my fingertips.

Then I did some comparisons and found I could switch to internet cable for what I am paying for my phone (most basic service they have) plus broadband. So I switched to internet cable and blazing speed. I mean, I thought broadband was fast, but it is nothing compared to cable. So all that cleared the way for me canceling my phone and broadband service today. Of course, it's never that easy. It took me about 7 automated menus and 20 minutes of hold time until I finally got to speak to a human, and then she was appalled I wanted to cancel my phone!! What if something happens? What if I lose my cell phone? What if I need to dial 911?? And she didn't give up there; she tried to talk me back round to service every step of the way, bless her. But it's done, it's canceled. And for literally the first time in my life, I have no land-line phone. It feels...strange. And yet, the cable internet is so worth it!

And now I have officially become one of those people I used to jeer at: the ones who compulsively keep their cell phones with them at all times. But I will never become one of those people you see happily driving along as they hold a cell phone to one ear and barely keep one eye on the road as they keep up with their phone conversation. I have enough turning up the volume on my car radio while driving...

Wee Turtles and Giant Penguins

In Joe Mallozzi's blog today, http://josephmallozzi.blogspot.com/ he posted some diagrams of Sheppard and McKay's quarters on Atlantis for S4. In one of the prop notations for McKay's quarters was 'Turtles in a Terrarium'. I'm pretty darned sure we haven't seen any turtles there before, so I'm hoping these are Carson's wee turtles that Rodney has now inherited and is looking after. Aww.

Tropical giant penguin discovered

A giant penguin that preferred the tropics to the southern oceans has been discovered by a team of scientists.

The fossilised remains of the animal, which lived some 36 million years ago, were found in what is today Peru. At 1.5m (5ft) tall, the penguin looked quite different from its modern-day cousins, a report in PNAS journal says. It had a long protracted skull and what its discoverers are describing as a grossly elongated beak that was spear-like in appearance.

The Icadyptes salasi penguin would dwarf all the penguins who walk the planet today. It would have stood head and shoulders over the emperor and the king penguins of the southern seas. Its well-preserved skeleton was discovered in the Department of Ica on the southern coast of Peru along with the remains of as many as four other previously undiscovered penguin species, all of which appear to have preferred the tropics for colder climes.

Now that's a penguin who might give a leopard seal a run for its money. :)

Nicely productive day so far today:

Pre-ordered A Dog's Breakfast (David Hewlitt's film, written, produced, directed by and starring) on Amazon. I am so excited that this is coming out in September. It won best film and best actor at the Stratford Film Festival and apparently is being shown at Glasonbury this weekend. The poor guy has been working very hard to promote this film, along with working fulltime on Atlantis, and I really hope it does well for him.

While I was at it, I also pre-ordered Atlantis S3 and Supernatural S2. Everything is coming out in September!

Discovered my cell phone contract had expired (oops), so I trotted over to the Cell Phone Store to renew the contract and upgrade my very crappy cell phone to a new and shiny one, which is costing me next to the nothing with the mail-in rebate, and I discovered that as a government worker I get a discount on my monthly bill on top of that. Yay! Then spent an unbelievably long time trying to figure out how to program said phone once I got home. I use various and sundry (and fairly complicated) software and other electronic devices every day, but for some reasons cell phones are a mystery when I try to wrestle them into submission. But, IM set up, text messaging set up, voice mail set up, and all my contacts are in place. We're not going to talk about the photo I took of my foot as I was doing all this...

I think I deserve a cup of tea. And I also think I deserve to begin 'Tulip Fever' by Deborah Moggach which just arrived.

Interestingly enough, there are a few of us who actually entered a fandom by way of a fanvid. Both
ivadel and I first investigated SGA by way of vids, and elgrey fell for Wesley Wyndham-Pryce via a songvid. So I thought I’d mention a few of my very favorite SGA vids in case anyone else was interested in seeing any of them, and am happy to take recs from others in any fandoms.

The first SGA vid I saw was Stress, featuring the inimitable Rodney McKay. A very, very funny songvid set to Stress by Jim’s Big Ego. (The artist’s name always makes me chuckle, because there’s a certain minion in my life whose name is Jim and who has a Very Big Ego Indeed.)

But at present my absolute favorite SGA songvid is The Fate of Atlantis:

I find it so very poignant every time I watch it because there are certain phrases that just seem to suit him so well. In fact, all the lyics seem to fit John Sheppard to a ‘T’, but every time I get to: I'm just a man, I'm not a hero, Just a boy, who's meant to sing this song, I really want to give him a hug.

On the Radio by Regina Specktor. This was a songvid made for the SGA fic, Freedom’s Just Another Word for Nothing Left to Lose. I broke my long-standing rule and read this deathfic, and it’s stayed with me ever since. It’s a very compelling, hard-hitting story and the vid fits it perfectly.

I love this song so much and I was just waiting for someone to do a vid to it, and Diana Williams did. When I first heard the song I wondered how many people in the US would get the ‘So I try a little Freddie’ line, but the vidder obviously did. Just a very cute vid with terrific editing and a great song.

Step aside Bob Dylan! This is now my absolutely favorite version of this song! The vidder, Derry, used the song as the backdrop to a vid about The Storm and The Eye and it is perfect in every way.

I’ve got lots and lots of SGA vids that I love and rewatch, falling into every possible category, but the above are the ones that I find myself going back to time and time again. If anyone wants any of these, just let me know. And now...I'm open to other suggestions. :)

Permanent LJ?

Since several of you have had LJ's for some time and have used them quite a lot, I have to ask:

Has anyone thought of doing this? Or have you done it? Does anyone think it's worthwhile? For the record, I'm not planning on doing it (unless someone could really convince me it was worth it). I just wondered how popular it is or was, especially with the huge LJ kerfluffle of a few weeks ago:
